[net.women.only] implementing .only by mail

blk@sytek.UUCP (Brian L. Kahn) (02/25/84)

If a moderator distributes mail, and maybe zaps the few wild flames,
it is possible to have what net.women.only originally tried to be:
Submissions by women only, but readable by anyone interested.

Is there really objection to letting men READ net.women.only, or
the net-mail version? This would cut down the problem of determining
the sex of a mail address. After all, if you can't determine a mail
(excuse me, Male) by his offensive, insensitive comments, what's
the difference?

Pardon the intrusion; I normally just read.

I would like to vote for a mail list where everyone knew who
was going to be reading/responding. The notion of a support group
almost always entails a confidentiality among the group. I can imagine
many questions and issues which would center around one's work environment.
It would be quite difficult to raise these issues if one could not be
relatively assured that one's comments/questions would not negatively
affect one's career. Knowing all of the people here who read net.women[.only],
a mailing list where there is no agreement of confidentiality would be of
little use.

I like the suggestion of restricted input (which is what net.women.only
was intended to be in the first place) but think that its been coupled
to closely with the idea of mail only. There are moderated newsgroups
now (net.announce is moderated, as is mod.ber). Maybe its time for the
women of the net to be forerunners by starting the first moderated
newsgroup for discussion (instead of announcement) purposes. Anyone
interested in mod.women? This group would be readable by everyone, but
the moderator would have to approve mesages for them to be posted to
the newsgroup.
