Hi. I would be interested in knowing what problems (or if you have had no problems) with the new contraceptive sponges that are on the market. For the last 3 years I have used a cervical cap (in my opinion one of god's gifts) with almost no problems. Well last week I lost it (please do not ask how and where. It is far too embarrassing to talk about). So I decided to try the sponges. Well less than pleased is a good word for my experience (I believe I had an allegeric reactions. I am hoping to get a doctors appointment tomorrow to find out what exactly happened). I am wondering if it was just a fluke (I have used spermicides with the cap before so it had to be the sponge material) or if lots of others have had the same problem. I had heard such wonderful things about it (but after all it was all advertising). I am going to probably go back to the cap but would still like to know what others think. ---georgia A good friend is a truly enjoyable thing

Thanks for reminding me (really been too busy with year-end bullshit, etc.). I thought the Sponge was going to be heaven sent (or should it be scent) :):) After using it several times I'm GREATLY disappointed. I developed an infection to end all infections. This was back in February. So I went to my gyn and he tells me (without doing a test of *any* sort) that I've contracted trichomoniasis which, he said, was a venerial disease. I says, "But doc, I'm married and there's no way...." you know the rest and he insists that it was a mild form of VD, and the only way to get it was through intercourse with someone infected. BULLSHIT! It turned out to be nothing more than a reaction (a form of vaginitius) from those damn sponges. But anyway, still hoping it wasn't the sponge, I took the prescribed medication (28.00 worth!!) and tried the sponge again. Another infection. (By now it's getting close to my vacation... par for the course (no pun intended). Well, to make a long story short I can't use them. I tried at least 3 times and each time I got an immediate infection. Hope the info helps. Melanie @ Bell Labs Short Hills (mhuxt!techpub)

Since they come in the ever handy three-pack I used all three and all three gave the same type of irritation. I, too, have used spermicides without any problems so your conclusion that there is something to the sponges seems reasonable to me. Recently, while I was waiting for a prescription at the pharmacy on campus I talked with the pharmacist and was told that there had been no complaints about the sponges. The next thing he got was an ear full from me about the irritation and that a word of caution should be given to new users.

My partner and I both have an allergic reaction to sponges. After mentioning this to some friends we are not the only ones encoutering this problem. At least it's not her that I'm allergic to. Peter Barbee P.S. Please excuse the posting to .woman.only
