[net.micro.6809] Coco-3 Disk Drive

knudsen@ihwpt.UUCP (mike knudsen) (08/04/86)

Well, I expecct this ole newsgroup to heat up a bit.
For once, RS lives up to its rumors!
About the diks drive mentioned in the brochure
(thanks to Jim Wood for posting that, my local Shack will
probably get the brochure next year) -- no, I don't have
a RS catalog handy, but since it mentions 156K of bytes,
it is clearly STILL only that Smithsonian 35T-SS job.
(Downward compatibility is nice, but it ain't free).

Will be nice if the new Disk BASIC has a TRACKS command
to switch between 40 and 35 (latter for writing disks for
an older COCO), but I'm not betting on it.

How about that video output -- RF, composite, and analog RGB?
That puts us ahead of some models of the Atari ST.
And pricewise--the Commodore 128 lists for $300, sells discounted
for $250, and Coco-III lists at $220.

Clearly Level-II OS9 is needed to use the 128K.
I wonder whether the BASIC has any way to use the other bank,
and how easy it will be to poke at things from machine code.

The Rainbow magazine staff probably have known about this for
months but had to keep their lips zipped. However, they could
have prepared a full report for release in the next issue--
can't wait for mine to come.	--mike k
