[net.micro.6809] Coco-III OS9 Disk UNSHACKED

knudsen@ihwpt.UUCP (mike knudsen) (10/16/86)

According to the latest _Rainbow_, the OS9 disk
driver is no longer "Shacked Up."
That is, the CCDISK in Level II OS9 for the Coco-III
will actually read your disk drives' device descriptors
for step rate, #tracks, and #sides.

Guess we won't need yet another Newdisk program -- but
presumably the great guys who wrote that will find plenty
of other gaps to fill.

There's a lot of other hard facts about Coco-III OS9
(and plain Coco-III) in this Rainbow too. The last couple
months were mostly cheerleading -- so many girls waving
pompoms that you couldn't see if anyone brought a football;
but based on this month's info, I can't wait to upgrade.

PS: To the guys downgrading the Cocos and suggesting we go
to STs or Amigas: No, I wouldn't mind paying $400 for a bare ST
instead of $220 for a Coco-III.
Yes, I DO mind losing my investment in 5.25" drives, multipak,
peripherals, and oh yes, software and expertise.
Coco-III gives many of the advantages of ST/Amiga without
sending you back to Square Zero.
Sure would like 384 vertical lines, tho....
