[net.micro.6809] Coco III and slow Disk ROM

knudsen@ihwpt.UUCP (mike knudsen) (10/28/86)

Sorry, I left this out of an earlier posting.
The new Coco III will run either 1.0 or 1.1 RSDOS
(Color Disk BASIC) no matter *how* slow the ROM chip
in the controller is, because the new Basic initially copies
all the ROMs into RAM and enters 64-K mode, in order to patch
away at them. Henceforth you execute from RAM exclusively,
which like all other chips in the III is designed to
hack the high speed. All this copy & patch happens at
slow speed before you even get the OK prompt.

Theoretically you should be able to yank the DOS ROM right
out of its socket while your III is chugging away
(I'll let you try it on yours first ;-) ).

This feature should make it easy to POKE your favorite mods
and extensions into "ROM", like faster step rates.
