Being confronted by surprise with a legal document to sign your
first day on the job is pretty obnoxious.  Some companies,
though, seem to be a little more honest about things than
that.  For instance, I understand that people who apply for
technical jobs at IBM are told something like the following:

"By signing this application, you agree that if you accept
a job with us you will sign the forms we put in front of you.
If you care about what we are asking you to agree to, let us
know and we will happily send you blank copies of the forms
in advance."

Presumably you can run it by your lawyer and decide whether or
not you want to work for them.
