From: cache::leigh Jon (ncsu!mauney), just look at the economic history of the nations that have and haven't been on the gold standard and one gets a different answer to your statement "So what?" Sure gold is a useful metal that "should be made into wedding rings, dental repairs, and electrical contacts", but it also has provided a sound basis for economic stability that our present "paper money" hasn't, can't, and never will do! Also, I believe the root cause of most of the evil in the world today is not the impression that money is worth something. The root cause is, I believe, a struggle for POWER! Most people want to control the lives of others. You can see this in homes as parents and children fight for control of the others, you can see it in our communities as town leaders fight to protect their empire from others, you see it every day in industry via office politics. You can even see it in these net.x groups as people like you and me struggle to influence the thinking of others, not for intellectual reasons but because we want to convert others to our way of thinking.... Most people want POWER and CONTROL over the lives of others. If they can't gain this power via an overbundance of regulations, they will wage war to get it. If you begin to analyze the actions of others in terms of this struggle for power, you begin to understand why people do what they do.... Allen decwrl!rhea!cache!leigh
