Regarding teaching courses based on the Unix source: 1) Up through V6 there was nothing explicitly prohibiting it in the license agreement. After John Lions prepared his book and taught some courses at UNSW based on V6 (with the knowledge and agreement of our lawyers), the lawyers decided that this was perhaps a little dangerous. So the V7 license was redesigned to prohibit it. I'm not sure which side of the line PWB came on. 2) There was no flap nor important disagreement between our lawyers and Lions, let alone hint of lawsuit. We simply decided that our position in maintaining control of the source would be made stronger by restricting the uses to which it could be put. 3) Lions was a little peeved by the amount of time it took to get approval to use his material, and justifiably saddened by the restrictions on its distribution, but there was no bad blood. He has since spent two six-month visits at BTL. Dennis Ritchie
