OK, I sorta blew this with my previous comments. I just checked
with NJ Bell and here's the story:
Up until last fall (at least in NJ), there was indeed a charge
per extension. This was distinct from the telephone rental and
you paid this whether you owned your own phone or leased. Since
telcos typically don't break their charges out, I'm sure many
people weren't aware of it. I think it was about 50 cents per
extension.
However, with divestiture, they've dropped this charge.
I was right last year but wrong today. Oh, well. Thanks to
those who sent me comments.
