[net.legal] charging for cable TV outlets / telephones

lauren@vortex.UUCP (Lauren Weinstein) (07/06/84)

Only in certain states is telco allowed to charge for any phone, regardless
of whether or not it is rented. Here in California, for example, there is
no such charge -- you can buy and install as many phones as you wish
with no monthly charges of any kind. As far as I know, at least here,
cable companies CAN charge monthly for each TV, though I don't know
if this has ever been tested in court.

Vortex!lauren mentioned he was not sure if the law banning multiple
outlets has been tested yet. It has. Here in San Diego, Cox Cable,
after making a generous contribution to a mayoral campaign, worked
with the police department in arresting those who violated the law
either by having multiple hookups or by modifying the converter
boxes to get the premium stations. Every conviction so far has been
upheld.
