This is a direct quote from the "State of NJ Driver Manual". Use parking lights only when you leave your car for a shoort time in a permitted zone. Parking lights cannot be used alone when driving. Now the last statement there certainly is not true. Parking lights CAN be used alone when driving. I've seen thousands of cars, including one police car yesterday, doing it. Maybe the sentence should read 'Parking lights MUST not be ...'. What I want to know is - Is it ILLEGAL to drive with only your parking lights on? If anyone has access to the state of NJ motor vehicle legal codes, will you please post the answer to this question? Thanks in advance. - Bill Cambre ATTISL 02272 ihnp4!houxe!45223wc (201) 834-3788

While I don't believe it is illegal in Maryland, it is against state policy. Honestly, if you are going to turn on any lights, turn on the headlights as well. The parking lights may be just fine to get your rearend marked, but they are not very useful in a forward direction. In Maryland, you are required to use your headlights in periods of darkness or whenever the visibility drops below some amount (I'm not sure exactly). What I use my parking lights for is to see my dashboard (Damned black back-lit instrument panel, is readable in the subdued light only with the marker lights on). And if you drive, use the LOW-BEAMS. EVEN in the day time. There is nothing more annoying than some fool behind you in the fog with his damned high beams on. -Ron

I do not know about NJ, but it is illegal in Oregon, and was illegal
in California when I lived there (and presumably still is).

> To my knowlege it is illegal to have your parking lights on at any time in > California, period. I think you mean it is illegal to have just your parking lights on at any time in California. I don't think I should go disconnecting your clearance. -Ron
