[net.legal] copyright law ... books and software

dixit@uscvax.UUCP (Vish Dixit) (03/23/85)

I am quite unaware of how copyright law works. I have a few questions
for anyone who cares to answer.

1. how does one secure a the copy right?
2. how long is the right valid/secured?
3. can the period of copyright be prolonged?

4. the copyrgiht notice in the books usually refer to how one may not
duplicate the material by such and such means. Can one circumvent
these by some (unintelligent) permutation of the material?

5. HOW DOES THE COPYRIGHT LAW EXTEND TO TRANSLATIONS?
does one need a permission to translate, say from German to English
                                              or Lisp to Prolog?
who gets the copyright of the translated material- original author
     or the translator?
