(with razor blades or whatever) can result in the would-be thief successfully
suing you for damages... which offense generally
receives a harsher penalty: "booby-trapping" or theft?  Will the car
owner come out ahead in the end, or will the thief get a better deal,
in general?

What _usually_ happens is that the "crook" either gets probation, or a 
jail sentence.  Either of these is rather frightening to the "average" 
person, and to _some_ people who have "been there."  To others, it's like 
beating a masochist for "punishment".  The "civilian" then either gets 
a BIG "fine" or "civil" settlement, and/or goes to jail, depending on the
court...

So who "wins/loses" the biggest?  Hard to say.
