I am just wondering if states that have Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) laws are different than those with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) laws. It seems to me that DUI requires a lot less alcohol in the blood than would DWI. That is with DUI, you are not necessarily intoxicated but you have had some alcoholic beverage. Here in Illinois we have a DUI law. Does anyone know if this is really more restrictive than those states with DWI laws (NJ) and if it impacts on the accident statistics? gene foster ihu1m!ewf

If I remember correctly, Georgia is one of many states that has both a "DUI" and a "DWI". That is, if your blood alcohol is high enough and you're stopped, you get hit with a driving while intoxicated (at least). Meanwhile, if you are stopped and your blood alcohol is just .1 below the limit, or you've been doing drugs of another sort, they can still get you for driving while impaired (DWI). BTW, I just heard an interesting story about an acquaintance who was stopped last year leaving a party with a blood alcohol level of 0.33 -- and he hadn't been drinking for a while before he left. The police watched him for about 5 minutes as he attempted to find his way out of the parking lot of the hotel where he was... and when his front tires hit the public roads, they arrested him. -- Gene "3 months and holding" Spafford The Clouds Project, School of ICS, Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332 CSNet: Spaf @ GATech ARPA: Spaf%GATech.CSNet @ CSNet-Relay.ARPA uucp: ...!{akgua,allegra,hplabs,ihnp4,linus,seismo,ulysses}!gatech!spaf

New York as DWAI (similar to DUI), "Driving while ability impaired". The penalties are somewhat weaker than those for DWI. New York also just raised the drinking age to 21 so that there would be more accidents on the border with certain other states with lower drinking ages ... such is life ... -- Rich Welty "Here young Walter is remembering his early days on the planet Krypton, with his father Jor-El Cronkite" - David Brinkley, on SCTV CSNet: weltyrp@rpi ArpaNet: weltyrp.rpi@csnet-relay UUCP: seismo!rpics!weltyrp
