University of Toronto Supercomputer Review Committee
The Chairman of the Research Board has convened a committee to
examine the supercomputer proposal currently in its final stages of
development with the Ontario government. While the research
opportunities afforded by a supercomputer are wide ranging and
exciting, naturally such a major commitment of resources makes it
necessary to examine all the implications of such a facility. The
members of the Supercomputer Review Committee are Professor C.C.
Gotlieb, Computer Science (Chairman); Dean R.L. Armstrong, Arts &
Science; Dean J.J.B. Smith, Arts & Science; Professor R.E.
Azuma, Physics; Professor M.P. Collins, Civil Engineering; Professor
P.P. Kronberg. Astronomy; Professor Z.G. Vranesic, Electrical
Engineering; Professor S.G. Whittington, Chemistry. Two other members
will be announced in early January.
Terms of Reference for the Committee are as follows:
1. To examine and comment on the technical aspects of the
supercomputer proposal.
2. To examine and comment on the financial (capital, operating)
aspects of the supercomputer proposal.
3. To examine and comment on the management of the proposed
facility.
4. To assess the implications and possible steering effects of the
supercomputer proposal on the research opportunities and existing
infrastructure within the university, and the research community
in general.
The Committee is aiming produce its report for the Research
Board by February 11th, thence to the Vice-President (Research) for
his deliberations with Governing Council. Those persons who are
interested in submitting their ideas or comments on the proposal
(available in the Office of Research Administration) are invited to do
so in writing as early as possible, and no later than January 24th, 1986.

of Toronto. An open hearing will be held by the Supercomputer Review
Committee on the evening of January 20th at 8:00 p.m. in Room 1101,
Sandford Fleming.
