Jerry Garcia, the patriarch of the legendary Grateful Dead rock band,
was arrested yesterday by a police officer who suspected him of
freebasing cocaine in the front seat of his BMW.

Garcia, 42, of San Rafael, was charged with possession of narcotics
after officer Mark Gamble noticed the luxury car parked off the roadway
near Metson Lake off Middle Drive in the park.

Gamble, who was on patrol on his Honda motorcycle, checked the car's
registration and found it was expired. When he approached Garcia, who
was sitting in the front seat, Gamble said he noticed a "strong smell of
something burning."

Gamble said Garcia dropped a piece of tin foil bteween the front seats.
The officer said he later found 23 bindles in a nearby briefcase, and
several contained brown and white substances thought to be either heroin
or cocaine.

Gamble said Garcia was unable to produce a current car registration and
said he had recently purchased the auto. Garcia added that he did not
have his license with him, the officer said.

"Mr. Garcia was very nervous but a perfect gentleman. He was a very
nice fellow," Gamble said.

The site of the arrest is not far from where the rock band, which still
has a large cult following, began its career with free concerts at the
Polo Fields.
