Is there a casual mens volleyball competition running in Toronto that a recent arrival from Australia could get a game in? Stacey

I have received a few e-mail messages like this... >Did you find out anything about volleyball games? I'm also interested >in playing. ...in response to the article I posted a few weeks ago. Here is a summary of what I have got from the net and from other sources. I found out about a number of competitions around Toronto. 1. The Ontario Volleyball Association (1220 Sheppard Ave E, 495 4090) has a number of different levels of competition, I phoned them and they gave me the number of a guy in one of the top Toronto teams, he gave me the time and place of their trainings but I didn't go because a. the standard sounded very high b. they don't play in regular competition, only infrequent tournaments, and I like to play a lot of volleyball c. the training is a long way from where I live and I don't have a car. If you are interested in regular competitions I think the OVA has a number of fairly high standard games running around town but you would have to call them. The woman I spoke to at the OVA didn't seem to actually know (or wasn't saying) much about competitions in Toronto. 2. The downtown YMCA has a regular volleyball competition running every Monday night from 6:45pm onwards. The only catch is that you have to pay the full membership fee to get in on it. The full fee, plus first time fee, comes to just under $500. I like playing volleyball, but $500 for it seems a bit excessive. They also have casual games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. 3. Someone sent me mail in reply to the news article offering to give details of a predominatly gay volleyball competition near Castle Frank. 4. I ended up playing last Sunday morning at 8:30 am on a public court up near Yonge+Steeles, which was a lot of fun and had quite a high standard of play. This is OK if you don't mind getting up early Sunday morning for a game (I don't mind, but then I'm addicted). We got kicked off the court by an aerobics class at 10:50 am. 5. North York Parks and Recreation runs a social mixed competition, if you call this organisation they can give more detail. 6. I have heard rumours of a number of other local competitions but most reports are that they are already overcrowded and may not have places for new players. 7. The universities and colleges have an irregular competition (the game results are published in the Toronto Star) but these competitions are not open to the general public (unless you want to watch). If you want any more detail about these competitions give me a call or send e-mail and I'll see what I can do about finding some. I have only really looked into mens or mixed competitions so I'm not sure what the volleyball situation is like for women in Toronto. Overall the situation seems to be very disorganised. The OVA probably doesn't know of or preside over much of the volleyball played in Toronto; and I can't find any other sports body claiming to know what is going on. Stacey. p.s. I'm shouldn't complain though, the situation is no better in Melbourne. p.p.s. thanks to Gene for getting me to the game on Sunday -- mnetor!utzoo!lsuc!hcr!hcrvax!stacey|Stacey Campbell, HCR Corp., 130 Bloor St W Toronto, Ont., Canada|Dsclmr: this is [not] the opinion of HCR|+1 416 922 1937
