[tor.general] C News or B news?

cks@radio.toronto.edu (Chris Siebenmann) (04/14/88)

I'm going to be setting up Usenet on a fairly small SysV machine, and
I'm wondering which version of the news software would be best to use.
I've heard good things about CNews's ability to run well on small
machines, so it sounds very attractive from that standpoint; however,
I'm worried about getting a complete copy (including the notes posted
by Henry and Geoff to various newsgroups), reliability, and how easy
it is to configure.

What do people who run CNews think - would you go with CNews if you
had to do it all over again? Is it possible/easy for a fairly
experienced Unix person who has never brought up a news system to
install CNews fairly easily? Are there any cautions about running
CNews? Does anyone have a complete CNews distribution available by
uucp, or where I could easily get a copy?

 Thanks in advance.

Although C News is smaller, faster, better designed and better written
than B News (I know because Geoff Collyer told me so), it is somewhat
more difficult to install, so if Chris has never installed news before,
he would probably be better off starting with B News.

As for where he would get a complete copy of the last release of C News:
that seems to me to be a strange question, when both the authors
work at U of T. Your best bet would be to send e-mail to Geoff at
utstat!geoff, or to Henry at utzoo!henry.
