[tor.general] Recording printed material for the print-handicapped

ruth@utstat.uucp (Ruth Croxford) (10/26/88)

PAL-Reading Services is a volunteer organization which records printed
material onto cassette tapes for people who are print handicapped. While
we do read material which falls into the ``recreational'' category, a lot
of what we do is job-support or material for students at post-secondary
institutions. For this type of work, we have a desperate need for
volunteers who not only read well, but who can understand and describe
material of a technical nature.

Just to give a couple of examples of the sorts of materials which might be
read, we are presently reading a Biology textbook, a number of textbooks
for a student who is studying Electronics at a community college, and
excerpts from books and journals for an Engineer. Some of the readings
require verbal descriptions of charts, graphs, and diagrams.

PAL is prepared and eager to train volunteers who can donate two or more
hours, either during the day, or in the evening. The office is located in
the OISE building at Bloor and St. George Streets, so it is easily accessi-
ble by TTC.

If you would like more information about PAL, or about recording material
for the print-handicapped, please phone the PAL office at 960-1177, or send
e-mail.

Thanks.
