[tor.general] It's about time...

evan@telly.UUCP (Evan Leibovitch) (10/25/88)

Gail Smith tonight announced her resignation from CFTO News. There's a rumour
going around CTV that Channel 9 is going to replace her with a newscaster.

The report said she's looking for 'new challenges'. That's good, because
it means she won't likely be appearing on another Toronto news programme.

If she's looking for acting work, I hear there are openings for a few
celebrity corpses on Night Heat.

Today's Toronto Star suggests she is negotiating with another Toronto station.
And I had hoped that Toronto had seen the last of her... According to the same
item, Sandy Rinaldo is a leading candidate to replace her. Ack, I'm going get
diabetes...

Yeah, I can't say I'll miss gail... Did anyone else see that great add
in Now magazine that was for some nightclub - it was a half page add, all
blacked out, with the name of the club at the bottom, and in big print in
white on the black background it said:

"Does Gail Smith really mean to do that"

Gail "the hammer" would probably do great in politics, did you ever
notice that she never shows any emotion?

What is everyone's fascination with Gail Smith? Why is her move
such big news? I think she is a fine news caster and a fine
human being :-). Maybe she reminds a lot of people of their own
mothers and so all those fears/anxieties/joys come out (well, not
so many joys, see above). Does anyone care to explain *why* they
hold these opinions? Enquiring minds want to know (as the saying goes).

Disclaimer: I have no connection to Gail "t.h." Smith (she's not
*my* mother or anything) except being a satisfied viewer.

Fine newscaster?!? Her voice and delivery set my teeth on edge.
You could say she comes from the John Turner school of elocution
(at least before his recent improvement). In addition she is a
prime example of the trend to Ken and Barbie newsanchors. It's
not surprising she boosted CFTO's ratings and that they regret
losing her. Anyway CFTO found themselves another cupie-doll recently
in Jennifer what's her name. I'm not against women newscasters,
I just want intelligent, capable journalists like Barbara Frum(p) or
Hilary Brown, not cue-card readers.
