The next meeting of the Playfair Society will be on Wednesday, January 11, 1989. The speaker will be Robert S. Lockhart and his title is Remembering Graphs. The talk will cover the following topics: A. Forms of remembering: especially recognition versus various forms of recall. B. Multiple codes: Does redundancy help? Verbal labels + pictorial representation Does it help to add numbers to lengths, areas, etc? Variations in degree of pictorial detail (does pictorial elaboration help?) C. Propositional versus analogue memory representation. Should numbers be added to lengths, areas, etc? Memory for continuous functions. D. Memory for category labels versus memory for quantities: Pie charts, histograms, etc. with nominal scale. Associating categories with quantities
