[tor.general] Modems

root@nebulus (Dennis S. Breckenridge) (11/09/89)

To all downstream sites of nebulus and any others that may be interested:

In the past month or so nebulus has undergone many changes but the most
dramatic of all was the addition of a new Telebit TB-2500. This is against
the grain of what I am doing here but I had no option but to add a TB2500
in place of the reliable Microcom 9624C. I have uncovered two major bugs
with the modem already (its ok thou, the TB1000 has the same two bugs).

Bug #1 - When using hardware flow control, the modem will send anywhere
from 4 to 8 characters after RTS is pulled low. This effect is
the input buffer on you tty gets blown and uucico times out.
Backing the baud rate down to 9600 reduces the frequency of this
problem. You 3B2 folks know this as skidding on eports.

Bug #2 - When using hardware flow control, the remote modem stops the
transmission by pulling it's RTS low. This in turn pulls the
local modem's CTS low. Under several occasions the modem will
never "hear" the remote end lift RTS and it will hold it's own
CTS low until the modem is manually reset. I have solved this one
in a bizzare way. The power to the modem is plugged into a BSR
remote control "Appliance" controller. Nebulus has an interface
from serial to BSR so I issue a powerdown command to the modem
	 from another TTY.

I have informed Telebit about both of these problems and they did
acknowledge that they are aware of them.
Now to the matter at hand. The modem phone numbers for nebulus are:

	   (416) 733-1609 - Microcom 9624C - Bidirectional
	   (416) 733-1630 - Telebit TB2500 - Bidirectional
	   (416) 733-1696 - Microcom 9624C - OUTGOING only (voice line)

Could the person or persons unknown that are polling my voice line
cease and decist! I am getting tired of talking to the phantom!
