[tor.general] CFNY: is the spirit returning?

ross@aimed.UUCP (Ross Morrissey) (11/30/89)

My radio has been tuned to CFNY more or less by default for years. Most people
are aware of the schitzo program changes over the last few years, and the
firing and resignation of many of the classic CFNY staff. I kept listening
only because it was the least irritating source of background noise that could
be relied on for regular information reports (news, weather, etc.).

Since the station was sold, flakey on-air personalities have been disappearing
and names from the past keep cropping up. I can't even remember the names of
the banished flakes (hey, its been days), but yesterday morning I heard Live
Earl Jive and Beverley Hills talking to Reiner Schwartz about Don Berns in
the afternoon. What gives? Anyone know if this is part of a scheme to bring
back commercial alternative radio?

I still remember, years ago, Earl Jive announcing: "...and that was Tubular
Bells, by Mike Oldfield...and now, side two..." Maybe there's more of this
on the way.

Oh gawd, I hope not. Tubular Bells got real BORING after the first few
times around. As did, of course, those wretched cash registers on the Pink
Floyd album. I would rather have CFNY go back to what CHUM-FM was in the
days of Reiner Schwartz and David Marsden. Speaking of Marsden, is he still
program manager at CFNY? I used to think that he was a real asshole, but he
has great taste in music.

CKLN and CIUT are the only REAL alternative music stations.

You can pick your programmers, and you can pick your nose,
but you can't ...

I read somewhere that Reiner Schwartz was taking over as program director
and would be responsible for establishing the ``sound of the 90's''.
Personally, I think that this is great. I've always liked Reiner's work
(remember Night Music on public cable in the mid 70's? Videos (!) of Nash
the Slash, FM, the glass orchestra...).

The sad thing is that the Live Earl Jive and Beverley are going to start a
weekend morning show (6:00-9:00). This is a shame because it means that
Masters and Moderns will disappear. Often, this is the only way I can
realize that it is the weekend!

Yes, but will we ever hear Throbbing Gristle again?

Live Earl Jive and the "Lovely and Talented" Beverly Hills will be doing the
weekend morning show, starting next weekend. Humble Howard and Fred
Patterson will return on Tuesday. Don Berns will be doing the Drive Home
show, and they've recruited some lady for the evenings, I can't seem to
remember her name. Live Earl Jive is the new music director, and having
spent some time discussing the type of music that CFNY will be playing in
the future, I know that "the Spirit" will be back soon! I was quite happy
when I heard this...

 ...Me....

P. S. I can be heard Monday through Friday, at 5:40am (Paul from Bob's
Happy Gas) on CFNY (102.1 FM).

Oh, if were only so.

Wonders upon wonders, though, just the other day, the CFNY staff must have
dug deeply into the vaults and dusted off an old Pete and Geets commercial
for Fairview Electronics because that's what I heard driving home from a
friend's place.

For such a long time, CFNY has sounded like a watered down version of Q107.
Maybe the good ol' days are coming back.
