I read the proposed std, and scribbled my reactions. One that I did not
harp on much, but will here, is that the usual UNIX section II format
and style were retained. It is admittedly better than the original V6
style, esp the errors, but .... A great deal is left unsaid, after all
we are supposed to know what you can get away with. If it doesn't forbid
it .... For example, the open call does not state that multiple opens
to the same file are just fine. For people from other backgrounds that
is not a casual assumption. Now, if they read everything, and look at
examples and and and they will figure it out. It shouldn't be a gestalt
issue. But it is. Sigh
On a different matter, the STD mentioned, in very careful wording, the
possible construction of a validation set. Henry Burgess is the person
to who I am supposed to speak, but I couldn't find a reference to his
net address, snailmail address or phone number. Are you out there?
We are currently building such a validation suite for BDS4.1, (yeah
I know 4.2 will obsolete it -- someday, maybe) and are rather interested
in the problem. I am anyway. Do I need to be a Uniforum member to be
on a sub-committee? How powerful a member? (We aint got much money here)
Anyway, I will be in Toronto, and would like to at least find out what is
going on. Thanks.
