Last weekend Jan 6, 1984 Pete Harris was shot to death by his wife near Arnold Calif. This left 44 of Pete's sled dogs stranded in the woods with no food or water. The sled dog racing club, of which Pete was a member, Sierra Nevada Dog Drivers (SNDD) immediatelly undertook the task of rescuing these dogs and finding them temporary shelter. The dogs had last been fed Thursday morning, and were reached by helicopter Sunday afternoon. The dogs were tranquilized by two Vets and brought out, by helicopter, in small groups Sunday and Monday. Four Government Agencies including the Fire Department, with which Pete was affiliated, all combined forces to affect the rescue. All dogs made it safely and are now looking for permanent homes. Some of these dogs actually raced in the Iditarod sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome. The others are their puppies (yearlings). They may be seen and adopted in Murphies Calif. where they are being held temporarily by SNDD. There is also a fund set up for financially assisting the Harris Family with the cost of the helicopter ($350 per hour) and with the expenses of the SNDD club. I believe Channel 10 from Sacramento is paying for half of the helicopter. Please contact Pat or Roy Steele in Sacramento at 916 925 7396 for more info.
