[ba.general] Bzzzing Hard Drive

Sigh..this is getting to be like the Adventures of Pauline Peril and Her
   Perverse Computer!

The system that I finally got, and am/was so happy with, has one miiiinor
teensy problem. Now that I have had it up for a few days I notice that there
is this mosquito or house-fly like buzzing coming from it. It doesn't do
it until it has been up and running for awhile (say 1/2 hour to an hour)
and then it does it intermittently, and as time goes by it gets more frequent
and more insistent.

A friend and I spent some time with it last night, and we are quite sure it
is coming from the hard drive. We took it out and checked all the mountings
and such, looking for something that might have become loose and would be
vibrating, but found nothing.

I don't think it is the disk itself, at least so far as the data integrity
is not affected at all <knock on wood>, and nothing I do during the buzzing
makes a difference <i.e. if I execute a command that actually accesses the
hard drive the buzzing doesn't stop, get worse, or start up if it's not
buzzing at that moment>. It just does it when it feels like.

Our best combined-head guess right now is that it's the motor.

It's a Seagate 30mg drive.

Any suggestions? Anything else I should look at? (Besides another
computer? :-D). Should I take it somewhere to be diagnosed? And if so,
can you suggest somewhere in the Bay area? If it is the motor is it something
worth fixing? HELP! :-)

Thanks! (For the umpteenth time).
