[net.rec.disc] Pluto Platters

petec@umcp-cs.UUCP (07/21/83)

I recently sat down and looked at my disc collection, which now numbers over
290. This has been a fairly good summer, as I have picked up 2 Pluto Platters
and one Flying Saucer, for totals of 4 and 2, respectively. Some of the discs
differ slightly, as I will describe. What I would appreciate is if someone
could give me info on different releases, approximate ages, approximate
values, or perhaps give me pointers in the right direction.
All of the above discs are made by Wham-o. One of the Pluto Platters(PP)
has Wham-o in small letters on the top, while the other 3 have 2 small
Wham-o's on them, plus the words WHAM-O FRISBEE in larger letters. This
difference suggests different releases, molds, and/or ages. All 4 say
'PAT.PEND.' on them.
The Flying Saucer is a slightly smaller, PP look-alike, except that the words
'Flying Saucer' replace 'Pluto Platter'. Were these a concurrent release with
the PP, or did they follow it? One of my FS says 'PAT.PEND', while the other
says 'DES.PAT.183626'.
(Since I wrote the first part of this letter, I have gotten some info on my
own, from the Frisbee book by Dr. Johnson. He gives 1/13/57 as the date of
the first PP from Wham-o, and 9/30/58 as the date patent #183626 was given
to Fred Morrison, father of the Frisbee. Still, I want to find out if these
dates are valid for dating old discs or not).
I also have an old disc that says 'Lincoln Frisbee' on the top, and
'Made Under Licence' (note spelling) on the bottom. It is also a 'PAT.PEND'ing
disc. It is obviously foreign, but where does it come from?
Any thoughts, comments, and information will be appreciated greatly.
