[net.rec.disc] Aerobies

joel@decwrl.UUCP (Joel McCormack) (04/11/85)

We just got a couple of the new Aerobies. Much thinner than a Frisbee,
center is empty, so a flying ring. Little spoiler on it, too.

Due to lack of surface area, it won't hover like a Frisbee. However, as
long as it has a bit of air speed, it has great lift and very little drag.
Very hard to get used to.

You stand there ready to catch it, it's 4 feet above your head but far away.
No panic. So it gets close, it's 3.5 feet above your head instead of level
with it like a Frisbee would be. Too late, you realize it isn't going to
drop in time for you to catch, and you find yourself running like hell to
get it.

These things, in other words, fly very far. Frisbee fans should pick one up
soon, but get a BIG field to practice on. We stand about 2-3 times farther
apart than we do with Frisbees, which means left/right errors are magnified
2-3 times.

They'd be killer on a Frisbee golf course.

I saw one of these in the store the other day - looks a lot like
the 'Skyro' that came out a few years back. I have one of these,
but never got used to it.

Does anyone know of any Frisbee golf courses in the S.F. Bay Area?
I've been playing frisbee golf with a friend of mine for years at
Stanford University picking arbitrary targets, but I'd like to find
a real course in the area.

Of course we have backup tapes. Do you want last year or the
 year before?
