From: Lee Moore <lee> Does anybody have a program that sorts di-troff intermediate form so that the post-processor doesn't have to back up? I am thinking of doing an application that must be processed strictly sequentially. Please send me any replies by mail. I will digestifiy, if requested. Thanks! -- = lee@rochester rochester!lee =

There is a program called "dsort" that comes with ditroff that will sort the intermediate output file so that your output device will not need to back up. Some devices cannot back up and dsort seems to do the right thing for them. Our IBM 6670 laser printer filter always runs dsort before it reads the ditroff intermediate file (since the 6670 can't back up) and this seems to work fine for us. Note that there are a few odd comments in the dsort code about "someone needs to test this and see if it really works" but it has been "working" for us for almost a year now.
