[net.text] Sun-based titroff previewer wanted

riddle@ut-sally.UUCP (Prentiss Riddle) (08/28/84)

We recently installed the TeX previewing program "dvisun" on some of
our Suns and response has been good, although few people here are
really using TeX as yet. Seeing dvisun in action has made the rest
of our users wonder what Sun-based previewers are available for other
text formatters, and specifically whether there is anything out there
for titroff device-independent format. I've heard rumors of something
along these lines at Berkeley; anybody know for sure?

Please reply by mail and I will summarize. Thank you.

Here are the responses to my request for info on a sun-based troff
previewer:

Here at Sun we have an old tseetool which previews old troff's output (it
needs special low-res fonts since printer precision is much higher; you get
to see the paragraph formatting and maybe squint at the words. But that's
much of what you need; use Interleaf if you want the real interactive
thing.) We are also looking for a ditroff version but don't know of one.
I'm not enough of a troff hacker to know how much work it would be to
convert.

It is available from Berkeley. I think you can get it (and other goodies
related to the device independent troff) by sending a tape and a copy of
your license to John Ousterhout at the CS division. You can try to contact
his secretary ( parker@ucbernie ). I think she handles the distribution.

We have a SUN based previewer which previews the spool files for the imagen
printer (no matter how they were produced - TeX, TTROFF, plot, ...). We have
just converted to 4.2 and are now about ready to distribute it. There may be
some licensing problems which we will have to look into (mainly concerning
the IMAGEN based code). If you want more info contact me (or if others want
more info).
