I am very new at TROFF and device support, so I am going to ask some very naive questions. I have heard that TROFF (*not* device independent TROFF) has a specific set of font metrics (character spacings) which it relies upon, unlike DITROFF which allows some sort of font metric table to be used. Does anyone know anything more about this? If anyone has a list of what the specific metrics are, I would really like to get a copy. Also, do pic and eqn rely on specific fonts or just raster dumps (more relevant to the former)? If a linedraw character set is available on a printer, can pic make efficient use of it?
