[net.text] Microsoft Word - Justify Shortcoming

howell@unc.UUCP (William Howell) (06/17/85)

Problem with Microsoft Word (Version 1.1 and 1.15).
Right Justification Sloppy.

Microsoft Word appears to be limited in its ability
to right justify. It can only microspace between words
and is not capable of microspacing between letters.
This naturally results in large gaps between words,
unless you want to go to the trouble of hyphenating a
lot of words! (I know that 2.0 has a hyphen program
to make it easier - but I for one don't care for
hyphenating as many words as you generally have to in
order to smooth out the right edge.)
Other, competitive programs, such as Wordstar can
handle microspacing between letters, but don't have the
power I need in other areas such as the ease of handling
columns.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has a
solution to the limitation in Word, such as does 2.0 solve
the problem, or does use of proportional space print wheels
solve the problem. Does Microsoft plan on fixing this or
don't they see it as a limitation? Does WordStar 2000
handle the problem?
Also, are there any word processing programs that can
handle microspacing and column work?
Please respond by mail as I do not read this group
regularly. Thanks.

Please post a summary to the net.

Here's another problem. With some printers, in particular Epsons,
Word(1.15) seems to misalign the text on the page. The text seems to be
placed too high and too far to the right. My page size is set
to 8 by 11 for the Epson but I still have to tweak my margins
to get it looking right. Anybody got any clues?

This is simply totally untrue. Microsoft Word can produce output that
approaches full typeset quality! This includes microspace justification.
I am guessing that your printer and font settings are the problem. If your
printer is one of those supported by Word you should be set up. If not, Word
supports the ability for you to design your own printer definition file, which
should be all you would need, although the traditionally dense Microsoft
documentation may not help you much toward this end.

Good luck.

And yet another. Anyone use the Apple Laser writer postscript support
with success? I can get the output from MSword to a terminal and it
looks OK, But when the printer reads it, it seems to get a few commands
and then wait indefinately. I never get any output. The initialization
routine works just fine and I get fine results emulating a Diablo 630.

Although I am an avid fan of Microsoft Word, and truly appreciate the flex-
ibility of its Printer Description File, microspace justification only
applies between words and NOT between characters. As far as approaching
full typeset quality, if you really believe that you have not used a good
modern typesetter!
