[net.text] For those of you who don't read net.internat

laura@l5.uucp (Laura Creighton) (11/25/85)

Right now there is a raging discussion about hyphenation in the usenet
group net.internat. I expect to see font design arguments soon. The
focus is on ``how to hyphenate foreign words'' but who knows how long
that will last.

Hyphenation. I have heard rumors of experimental data showing
that hyphenation makes text harder to read (by some measure).
If you know a publication to that effect, please send me a pointer.
Personally, I just don't like hyphenation.

Hyphenation -- as the stylebook of the Oxford University Press says,
"If you take the hyphen seriously you will surely go mad." (I'm sure
everyone has seen that quote.) My rule is to to use a hyphen if leaving it
out would confuse the reader or offend his sensibilities.

The subject under discussion is when a word is broken between
two lines, and thus hyphenated (as compared with moving the
entire word down to the next line), not a word that is always
hyphenated, even when it falls on the same line.
