[net.text] TeX and its fonts and other fonts

reid@glacier.ARPA (Brian Reid) (12/10/85)

Several people have pointed out that you can make TFM files for fonts that
are not TeX fonts. This is true, but TeX can't set math with them. The
information that TeX needs to set math with a font is substantially greater
than what is contained in the TFM files. If you are willing to live with
a document that has the body in Palatino and the math in Computer Modern,
that's fine with me.

You can even pick nits and say that TeX can set math with any font. True, I
suppose, but it can't do it well, and the supposed reason that people use
TeX in the first place is to do things well.
