1. To use the APPLE LASERWRITER effectively and to use the features of the postscript language, I would like to exchange views on the relative benefits of using: a) troff + some filters, possibly public domain filters b) formatters other than troff 2. Has anyone seen announcements concerning use of the Postcript language from UNIX (any version, either System III, System V, Xenix, etc.). 3. Could anyone mail me Adobe Systems Network Address? In article <118@strolog.UUCP> giulio@strolog.UUCP (Giulio Bertellini) asks about > ... [using] the APPLE LASERWRITER and ... the postscript language ... [via] > a) troff + some filters, possibly public domain filters > b) formatters other than troff > >2. Has anyone seen announcements concerning use of >the Postcript language from UNIX (any version, either >System III, System V, Xenix, etc.). We've had our LaserWriter hooked to our VAX running bsd4.2 unix for a couple of months now. We are using Adobe's Transcript to filter our troff files and send them to the LW. It seems to work fine, thought several people have complained about results being different from the Imagen(?) we used to borrow (We are all still troff/LW beginners here ...). It also take lpr input. We can also write postscript files directly and send them to the printer. In fact, Adobe includes a bunch of 'cookbook' postscript examples for the user to experiment with. Admittedly working with postscript directly is sort of lowlevel, but you can do some very fancy things, and since the language is in the Threaded Interpreted class (eg Forth) if you are serious about it you can create what ever high level 'words' (commands) that you want. (I'm thinking about surface plotting words for f(x,y) as well as fermi-surfaces(physics) and such). Now, what I'd really like to get a hold of is a postscript interpreter for an arbitrary bit mapped device so that by giving the (numpic X numpic) of my DecWriter, I can have it print my postscript files. >3. Could anyone mail me Adobe Systems Network Address? A while ago Adobe put a message on the net about their two new books, published by Addison-Wesley Postscript language Reference Manual by Adobe systems Incorporated ISBN 0-201-10174-2 Postscript language Tutorial and Cookbook by Adobe systems Incorporated ISBN ??? I just happened to save the header of that message which I have abreviated and included below. I hope it helps. BTW. I got a copy of the first book from our campus bookstore. It seems rather well done. Appendix D gives some details of the LW, including how to use it interactively. (the second book was not yet in the bookstore) =========================================================================== From cornell!vax135!houxm!whuxl!whuxlm!harpo!decvax!decwrl!Glacier!adobe!shore Thu Aug 29 12:29:18 EDT 1985 Path: lasspvax!cornell!vax135!houxm!whuxl!whuxlm!harpo!decvax!decwrl!Glacier!adobe!shore >From: shore@adobe.UUCP (Andrew Shore) Reply-To: shore@adobe.UUCP (Andrew Shore) Organization: Adobe Systems, Palo Alto Keywords: PostScript Adobe Systems Incorporated =========================================================================== -- Todd Olson ARPA: olson@lasspvax -- or -- olson%lasspvax.tn.cornell.edu@cu-arpa UUCP: {ihnp4,allegra,...}!cornell!lasspvax!olson US Mail: Dept Physics, Clark Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 14853-2501

Adobe Systems (my employer, the developer of PostScript) sells a package called "TranScript" to drive PostScript printers from UNIX systems. TranScript contains output translation filters for - troff C/A/T files - ditroff intermeditate files - plot(5) files - Diablo 630 print files - simple text files ("lineprinter listings") - Tektronix 4014 files TranScript release 2.0 is compatible with both 4.2BSD and System V Unix systems and contains spooler interfaces for the 4.2BSD lpr/lpd/printcap spooler and the System V lp/lpsched spooler architectures. TranScript supports serial communication with ALL announced PostScript printers: Apple LaserWriter QMS PS-800, 1200, and 2400 Dataproducts LZR-2660 and 2665 Linotype Linotronic 100 and 300 Several other systems running under Unix produce PostScript print files (which may be spooled and printed with TranScript); among them: Scribe (from Unilogic) Two filters for TeX DVI files: - one from Textset of Ann Arbor - one public domain implementation (contact the Unix-TeX people at Washington) A driver for the S statistics package was posted to the net some time ago. For more information (pricing, ordering, etc.) about TranScript or PostScript, write: Adobe Systems Incorporated 1870 Embarcadero Road, Suite 100 Palo Alto, CA 94303 Attn: Megan Furner Or call: (415) 852-0271 Also, two books about PostScript (authored by Adobe Systems) have been published by Addison-Wesley Publishing Company of Reading, Mass. "The PostScript Language Reference Manual", 336 pages, illustrated, $22.95, ISBN 0-201-10174-2 "The PostScript Language Tutorial and Cookbook", 256 pages, illustrated, $16.95, ISBN 0-201-10179-3 Both books should be available (or orderable) in local bookstores. --Andy Shore Adobe Systems Incorporated [Many names above are trademarks or registered trademarks of various companies, too lengthy to enumerate here.] We are on Usenet and are 1-hop away from several ARPA sites. This address won't work. Andy Shore of Adobe can be reached at adobe!shore@SU-Glacier.ARPA or {decwrl, hplabs, sun, bellcore}!glacier!adobe!shore I don't think that the folks at Adobe have yet set up "customer assistance" or "inquiry" computer mail address, but I'll bet that if enough people bug Andy with mail, he might just set one up. -- Brian Reid decwrl!glacier!reid Stanford reid@SU-Glacier.ARPA
