It is not clear to me that any working post-processors are provided
by Bell Labs with the device independent troff (ditroff? titroff?).
I've tried two of them.

The Linotron post-processor doesn't work with a normally configured
Linotron. The folks at Bell Labs wouldn't (couldn't) figure out how
to use the standard Linotron software, so Thompson reverse-engineered
the thing and they wrote their own. Mergenthaler won't let Bell distribute
their special version.

I also tried using the 'cat' post processor to run our Versatec via
the Berkeley 'vcat' program. This didn't work, either. Bell claims that
the cat post processor sort of works, but it didn't work for my few tests.

There are also Canon engine and APS post processors -- I don't know how
well they will work. I've heard that Imagen has a post-processor they
provide to customers who buy their machine.

Anyone considering TiTroff should also look at the Documenter's
Workbench, whcih includes a working APS-5 interpreter (but not a
202 or C/A/T version). The TiTroff C/A/T interpreter is supposed
to be not very good for production use since it doesn't optimize
the order of placement of characters the way "otroff" does. The
Documenter's workbench includes "otroff" just for C/A/T support...

We use the aps post-processor on our aps-5G. It works.

I am having difficulty getting ditroff from Berkeley running and am
hoping you net people can help. First, my distribution tape did not
include the installation script "dit.install" so I kinda played it
by ear. On the second attempt at installation we discovered that the
imagen driver distributed on the tape was for 240 dpi imagens. I have
modified every file in which I found a def or other mention of 240 dpi
with no success. I did get output using the 240 dpi version but it was
reduced in size accordingly. Also, there were alot of fonts that the
distributed software thought I should have which I didn't. I assumed
that these fonts were distributed with 240 dpi Imagen printers but not
with my 8/300.

If there is anyone out there who
   a) has the BSD ditroff running correctly with an 8/300 or
   b) has the dit-install script or
   c) has a ditroff filter for an 8/300 which I can have a copy of or
   d) has some advice for me or
   e) is having the same problem and would like to compare notes
please respond to me via e-mail.

Thanks for reading this. I have always had good success when asking netlanders
for help and hope this turns out the same. TIA

I'm seeing a lot of refs to "BSD Ditroff". Would someone please explain,
What is it?
How do you get it?
What's the connection with DWB from AT&T?

Could someone please tell what is ditroff and where does one get it.

have it. ( we are running 4.2BSD on Suns ).

Any help appreciated...thanks in advance
