> Does anyone have a program that converts from troff `cat' phototypesetter > output to dvi file? I need such a beast desperately. Thanks... We have one that came from Imagen. They claim it is no longer a distributed product so they might be willing to give it away. Interestingly, I only stumbled across this the other day, when I was trying to load in other font families into a troff document. We have an Imagen 5/480 with release 2.1 of the Imagen software. We do not have ditroff. What I would like to know is, how do you reference other fonts from within troff. I.e. I would like to say ".ft helvetica10" or something like that. The last person I spoke to at Imagen didn't know how to do it, and commented that we ought to buy ditroff from AT&T, and some font licenses from Imagen. I pointed out that there were a hundreds of fonts on our distribution tape (all Knuth's "computer modern" fonts which are in the public domain). They said they were in "dvi" format and useful only to TEX. But, that is apparently true only in the (relatively) new version of the Imagen software which converts right from cat to imp files. The old software converts from cat to dvi to imp files and really does use the dvi fonts on the distribution tape. So my question is, how can I reference the dvi fonts from within troff? Please forgive me if I sound naive about this stuff. I am. This is not my area (and no one here knows any more). Thanks. Don Libes {seismo,umcp-cs}!nbs-amrf!libes

The catdvi program that Imagen distributes converts cat files to DVI version 1. That was the format produced by the ancient TeX 78. The current TeX, TeX 82 produces DVI version 2 files. These two formats are COMPLETELY INCOMPATIBLE! The dviimp program that Imagen distributes with its 4.2 software also only understands DVI version 1. Now don't get Imagen's dviimp confused with the dviimp on the TeX distribution tape, which (to my knowledge) only understands DVI version 2! The last release of Imagen's software that I got contained the following: catimp -- CAT troff to impress dviimp -- New 2.0 DVI format to impress. It did not contain the old catdvi which did in fact go to version 1.0 dvi format files nor the old version of dviimp which want from version 1.0 to impress. What bothers me is that ditroff produces output which it refers to as dvi files which is completely different from TeX's dvi output. Perry Smith pedz@ctvax
