[net.text] TeX in C?

wescott@sauron.UUCP (Mike Wescott) (08/27/86)

I have heard that there exists a translation of TeX into C. This
rumor is associated with Texas A&M. Anybody know anything about
this? Who to contact, etc?

Thanks.

I'd better retract this before the net gets swamped with rebuttals.
U.Wash distributes Unix TeX. I crossed this up with it being written in C.

I think that Texas A & M University is indeed a TeX distribution point.
For what it is worth, I think that Dr. Bart Childs of Texas A & M
University could help you find a C version of TeX. His telephone
number is (409) 845-5470. I tried to call him but he was away on
vacation for the week. You might also want to try Dr. Naugle, at
(409) 845-3104.

Hope this helps,

I believe at least two such translations exist.
One was done by David Fuchs here at Stanford (an associate
of Knuth), and is the basis for his TeX version for the IBM
PC (published by Addison-Wesley). This version is \not/
public-domain. I don't know anything about the other version,
but David might be able to help you locate it.
