[net.text] EDT for UNIX

pac@munsell.UUCP (Paul Czarnecki) (10/23/86)

I am looking for a version of DEC's EDT editor that runs under
UNIX on Sun 3's. I would prefer a complete editor but I am
willing to give up command mode. I am aware of Boston Business
Computing's offering(s) and the EDT mode of Uniworks' CCA EMACS.
(Does Gnu have anything?)

PD code is preferred but I am willing to pay for good software.

I would also appreciate comments about using EDT on a terminal
that does not have a vt100 style keypad. How awful is it?

(Please, no flames about which editor is better. Sorry about the
double posting but I couldn't decide which group was more
appropriate.)

Status: R

This is a summary of the EDT (or emulations) that I've found for
UNIX. Some are in the public domain, others are commercial
copies.

> GNU v18

GNU v18 comes with an EDT emulation package, it was written by
mike!yetti (hope I go that right) v18 is in beta test now, it
should be available soon. There is also a gosling package that
can be passed through the GNU converter (which didn't handle the
key bindings well at all)

> Univ of Toronto, Software Tools Group.

There once was a Pacal version of EDT placed in the public domain
by the Univ of Toroto Software Tools group. I presume it is
still available, but I have not contacted them about it.

> Unipress

Unipress Emacs has an emulation package. I presume it is written
in mlisp.

> BBC

Boston Business Computers has written an EDT in C. It is
available on Ultrix, Xenix, and the IBM PC. Presumably a port to
Sun3 OS shouldn't be too hard. BBC claims to do a *complete*
EDT, not just keypad EDT. Yes, this includes line mode commands.

> Uniworks

Uniworks has a set of keyboard macros that do EDT mode for CCA
EMACS. I have used it in the past. It seems to work ok.

> Can EDT be used realistically on a SUN which doesn't have a vt100
> style kypad?

I got two forceful no votes here. When you add this to my
forceful no vote I think the answer is conclusive. We need EDT
here to ease the migration from VMS/RSX users to Suns. I will
reccomend that we use MicroEmacs as the editor for these people.
It may seem strange for me to choose uemacs instead of GNU. I
believe that the startup time for GNU is high enought to
discourage people who really don't need GNU's power. vi(1) is
out because of insert mode. An EDT user will not like this.
textedit(1) might be a viaalbe alternative, but it is such a
*poor* editor!

ucbvax!phr, oddjob!matt, lmi-angel!bob, infinet!rhorn for all the
answers they provided to me.
