I recently wanted to send mail to quite a few users of a well known electronic conferencing system inviting them to participate in a public conference. Since many of these users are online at 300 baud, and since I was sending to 146 users, I chose to send individual messages so that people wouldn't have to wade through six or seven screens of addresses before getting to the message itself. I sent the messages via MAILNET. The site administrator of the system was (from my interpretation of his response) quite upset. Among his comments was this: > I strongly suggest you read the guidelines of both Usenet, BITNET, MAILNET, >and the Defense Data Network (DDN) ARPANET. You will find that all of these >networks do not allow massive flooding of a site as you did. My question for all of you is this: where, if anywhere, are the guidelines he mentions? I looked in net.announce.newusers, at several papers and one book on electronic conferencing and through the /usr/local/doc directory on-line to no avail. Has anyone out there seen anything, either on-line or in print, that would have clued me in on this? I have no desire to hog resources but neither do I care to be taken to task for my faux-pas. I still have a lot of work to do to set up this conference and if you know where I can find relevant articles please let me know. Please respond via e-mail. Thank you, Bruce Jones bjones@sdcsvax.ARPA
