IBM SAID TO PLAN ANNOUNCEMENT DEC. 16. Misweek,
11/30, p.6. Last month, Greg Leveille,
president of Micro-Edge, predicted that IBM
will offer the UNIX operating system on its
Personal Computer, the Series 1, and the 4300
series. Leveille, quoting sources both within
IBM and AT&T, said IBM would make its formal
announcement on Dec. 16. Observers say this
will "take some of the wind out of AT&T's
sails," as divestiture takes place Jan. l.
Leveille also said that by 1984, many
semiconductor companies will have UNIX
versions, that several firms, including WECo,
are working on a UNIX chip, and that WECo will
be selling 256K RAM chips in 1984.

That's no rumor; IBM already offers UNIX on the Series/1 (they
call it cpix) and the 9000 (available from IBM Instruments).

Subject: IBM UNIX DECLARATION EXPECTED - (nf)

UNIX IMPLEMENTATION FOR IBM COMPUTERS
ANTICIPATED, Information Systems News, 11/28,
p.1. Industry sources reported that IBM will
make a major announcement defining its strategy
for providing UNIX for its mainframe
processors, and possibly for its PCs. The
announcement may come by mid-December. Some
sources see the strategy declaration as
forestalling possible competitive pressure from
AT&T after Jan 1; others view it as answering
customers' clamor for UNIX applications.
Several leading software firms are pursuing
UNIX development contracts with IBM.
