Unless you've spent the past year on another planet, you probably know that the beginning of this year marked the divestiture AT&T. A product of that divestiture was the formation of a new company, temporarily called Central Services Organization, Inc., which will provide for the regional telephone companies services similar to those provided by Bell Laboratories to AT&T. As an employee of this company, I can see the need for a USENET forum in which employees of the CSO and regional operating companies can discuss topics of mutual interest. This would be similar to the att.all and btl.all newsgroups currently in use. I would like to propose that the CSO and regional operating companies be permitted the exclusive use of the currently existing bell.all newsgroups for this purpose. Implementation would require the cooperation of interested CSO and operating company sites in restricting the distribution of these newsgroups to non-Bell sites. In addition, each interested Bell site would exchange these newsgroups directly with at least one other Bell site. As I have done for att and btl newsgroups on gamma, AT&T and Bell Laboratories sites can implement "recordings" discouraging submissions to the bell newsgroups. If anyone else has already proposed and/or started to implement such a scheme, please contact me as we would like to participate. If not, I would be willing to start things off by offering to set up news feeds between gamma and a few other interested Bell sites. A sentence in my previous article may be misleading. What I meant to say was that Bell sites would not forward these newsgroups to non-Bell sites. They would be restricted to Bell sites thereby protecting any proprietary information which may be discussed.
