[btl.micro] Apple IIe and Z80 card Compatibility Problems

k9un@iwsl7.UUCP (08/04/83)

I just purchased a new Apple IIe. I have had a vanilla Apple II for
a couple of years now and have recently added a generic Z80 card
to add flexibility to my system.
My IIe has an 80 column extended card, a Super Serial Card,
2 disks and a printer interface.
(Besides the Z80 card)>
When I purchased the IIe, the dealer said that their were problems with
the IIe and the Z80 cards. He didn't elaborate on the kinds of
problems, but he said that the card may not work in the IIe.
He indicated that some cards worked on some IIe's, however.

I noticed that (particularly) when I am in 80 col mode (cp/m or Apple
DOS), I occasionally get garbage characters (or perhaps just dots or
groups of 4 dots in a square) that appear on the screen. They don't
seem to do any interferring with my program execution, but they
are annoying (esp. when I am using it in terminal emulation).

I ran a quick test this morning, and I found that I can get the
garbage by looping on the catalog cmd in 80 col mode (just once in a while
a char pops up).
I removed the Z80 card and for the next 3 or 4 minutes there were none.
Upon replacing the Z80 card, they again appeared.

I will continue testing, but I wonder if anyone out there has had
similar experiences and/or know of any fixes?

I will post a summary to net.apple if there is sufficient response.
