I need some down to earth advice on adding memory
chips to the empty slots on expansion boards in
the IBM-PC. I gather that the chips I need are
4164 200 ns, 64K chips, often sold in groups of 9
(8 + 1 parity bit) to make up 64K bytes.
Reading the mail order ads, the going price seems to be
about $55 - 60 for a set of 9 chips.
Since I have 2 expansion boards, each with slots for
additional 192 K (3 * 64K), it looks like a $360
investment to bring my memory up to the max (64K motherboard
plus 512K on the expansion board).
My questions are:
1) How generic are the chips? Do manufacturers differ
significantly?
2) How compatible are they with each other and the boards
I will be putting them on (AST Combo, TK Eng)?
3) Any recommendations on mail order dealers and/or
retailers in the Chicago area? My interest is in quality
as well as price.
Thanks,
Andy Berman
