The Naughtilus Project is once again classified, but the one memoir that I got into print describes the Naughtilus's hardware random- number generator: ... It was also Orr who suggested building a hardware random-number generator, having read about the subject in some trade journal or other. W. Blackman was en- thusiastic about the idea, since the Theory Group was just starting work on the Miracle Sort algorithm. The research people turned out dozens of basic designs, but most of them were incompatible with the auto- synchronous M-bus protocol. The final design, shown in Figure 00, was due to Vining, who built the proto- type with spare parts from Casale's home laboratory. It is worth mentioning that the Miracle Sort was later discovered independently at various other institutions, and (inevitably) published. One wonders what need ever existed to suppress publication for the sake of "national security." -- Col. G. L. Sicherman ...{rocksvax|decvax}!sunybcs!colonel
