Does anyone out there know if use of the DEA (software version of
DES) for such things as password encryption and the crypt(2) command
requires a license from IBM and/or royalty payments to IBM ? (Note
that CRDS is using DEA in independantly developed UNIX look-alike software
so whatever arrangement AT&T might have made with IBM for UNIX proper is not
relevant here).
It seems that the federal standard publication on DEA/DES makes
mention of IBM Lucifer patents. I seem to remember that
IBM put the whole thing into the public domain some years ago as part of
the federal standardization process and grants everyone who
asks a non-exclusive royalty free license. I cannot find any specific proof
that this is indeed the case however.
If anyone knows more about this I would appreciate hearing from them
by either email, US SNAIL or (last resort) posting to the net.
