[net.micro.cbm] More info on C64 Assemblers and disk drives

porter@inuxd.UUCP (11/04/83)

For some reason the following mail got barfed back at me by ARPA,
so I am posting it instead. (If anyone has had problems with this
let me know, so I could avoid this is the future.)

The only assembler package to even consider is MAE. They are the
de facto standard and for good reason. The price has come down
drastically - $60......I can remember when it was the best assembler
for the PET at $175. It does macros, conditional assembly, linked
files, has a text editor and formatter, plus there is a users group
in Central Illinois to support only this assembler - how many other
companies can claim this - with a jillion disks full of useful
source code. Unless you are buying an assembler for a ten year old,
....correction even if you are buying an assembler for a ten year
old, don't consider anything else. period. The users group is run
by:

Brent Anderson
ASM/TED Users Group (ps: this is MAE former name)
300 S. Century
Rantoul, Illinois (I forgot the ZIP, this is from memory)

To get the semi-monthly magazine of the Central Illinois
PET Users Group (which is now heavily into 64s) send $20
for a years subscription to:

Jim Oldfield
CIPUG (that's short for Central Illinois Pet Users Group)
635 Maple
Mt. Zion, IL 62549 (this one is right for sure)

Every other month Jim puts out this 30-40 page magazine with the
help of somw of the other folks in his area. Anything that is ever
made for the 64, VIC, PET has been reviewed independantly in this
magazine. The content is very lean and mean, no fat, tell it like
it is. Highly recommended. Brent (of ATUG fame) has a column in
here to tell everyone of the recent additions to the ATUG library
of disks.

[The following was also returned undeliverable.]

The 1541 drives have been plagued with head allignment
difficulties due to overheating. The new models of the
1541 do not have this problem. The new versions are
color coordinated with the 64 instead of the VIC.

As far as 80 column boards go - I don't know anything.
Protecto has been advertizing heavily, but I don't trust
them as far a I can throw them - marketing companies just
give me the heebee jeebees. Stick with a reputable firm.
Richvale Telecommunications in Toronto had an 80 column
board, but I haven't gotten my latest issue of the Midnite/PAPER
to read up on the review. When I do, I'll post it.
