Could someone please tell me (by mail) how upward compatible the C64 is with the VIC 20? I'm interested to know what peripherals differ how the plugs in the back differ how the CPU's differ (someone claimed the cartridges aren't compatible because there are different chips. I thought they were both 6502 clones.) I'm trying to evaluate the difference between buying a VIC 20 for a 12 year old (who appears interested in computers but we don't know how seriously) along with a possible speech synthesizer (the dealer says it only fits the 20 but with a simple cable adapter they are building will fit the 64 in January) and possibly later throwing away the 20 and getting a C64. Of course he's going to want all the nifty add-on's for it and will no doubt get some of them from various relatives (you know how relentless 12 year olds can be). Also, I seem to recall someone posting a schematic for interfacing a normal cassette recorder to a VIC 20 without spending $70 on their cassette recorder, but didn't save it. If someone has it I'd appreciate a copy. Respond by mail, please. I have a feeling this is old hat to a lot of people on the net and I'd hate to see 20 similar replies.
