[net.micro.cbm] Is the C64 going the way of the great white awk?

barnes@mprvaxa (12/13/83)

I was just in a local Computer store and the fellow in the store told me
that as of next month software for the C64 would be hard to get because
the C64 has been discontinued. Does anyone know anything official?
I am reluctant to believe something like this the first time I hear it (I
don't want to believe it either, since I just bought one of the things).

You've got to be kidding. Two facts. One; Commodore is shipping about 30,000
units per month on the c64. Two; Commodore is making money on the c64. Not
much, but they are more than breaking even. Would you stop production on an
item that is making money when you are the only PC manufacturer who is?

Some of the small time "Ma & Pa" computer stores are really
getting ticked off with Commodore because of the biggies like
K-Mart, Toys-R-Us, and the like are undercutting their sales.
They just can't match them on price for the 64. The secret is
in the peripherals, add-ons, software, and service. Do what
the big guys can't - but few dealers realize this.

The smaller dealers would also be happier if Commodore had
a new and improved version of the 64 that the mass merchandisers
didn't have yet. There have been a few "P128" and "B128"s
around, but not enough to satisfy smaller dealers. Give 'em
time and they'll have a new kid on the block, but not yet.

This might be what your local dealer is talking about.
The 64 is here to stay, especially when no one has anything
close in price/performance range.
