[net.micro.cbm] 8 pin and 5 pin DIN cables: question

bjf@utcsstat.UUCP (Bruce Freeman) (01/12/84)

Lately there has been some discussion about 5 pin and 8 pin DIN cables
for the C-64. Can someone explain what the difference is (besides the
obvious)? What are the extra pins used for? I recently saw the review
of the Music Construction Set which stated that it didn't work with a
5 pin 64. Now I happen to have a 5 pin C64 but I also have a 1702
Commodore colour monitor. I note that most people have the 1701 monitor.
Does the 1702 fix the problems people have with 5 pin cables? What
exactly is the difference between the 1701 and 1702? Living in Toronto
one seems to get Commodore stuff before anywhere else and it can get
confusing when noone seems to know what you're talking about. I heard that
one got a better picture with the 8 pin cable but I have hooked up my
5 pin cable to the chroma, luma and audio inputs at the back of my 1702
and the picture looks just as good as the 8 pin C64's in the stores.
As usual any information will be gratefully appreciated and I will pass
on any information to people requesting it or a summary to the net if
there is sufficient interest.

As far as I know, there isn't any difference at all. The store that
I work at recieved a 5-pin C-64 but the monitor came with an 8-pin
cable. The 8-pin cable simply has a couple of pins that don't seem
to be used (I took it apart to make the 5-pin cable, for lack of
parts).
